When in Rome...

If you're visiting Rome is a good idea to stay at least 4 nights, the more the better, you won't run out of things to see (or eat).
Things to do
First things first. Get yourself a Hop on Hop Off Bus ticket. It's the only way to get around. It stops at all the major tourist spots (including those I have recommended below) and runs all day. It's convenient and you'll see more this way. Make sure its the red bus (pictured above). Here's the website that provides timetables and maps:

Vatican City. The Sistine Chapel. Need I say more?
Ahh... actually, I will. This is amazing. Words can not describe the amazement I felt inside this spectacular place. A must see.
Tip: Allow most of one day so as not to disappoint and get there early.

Piazza Novana always seems to be buzzing with activity, from street performers and vendors to musicians and tourists. You'll see it in a different light (so to speak) first thing in the morning, the afternoon and the evening. All are worth a look see. Tip: Avoid Piazza Novana's overpriced restaurants.

The Spanish Steps are attract young crowds in the evening. If you like to people watch you'll see lots of action here, the later it gets the more excited people become, singing and chanting as the night comes in.
Tip: If a man with a smile offers you a rose - don't take it - they won't accept it back and will try to get 20 euro out of you.

The Colosseum. This is a truly impressive sight to come upon. You can see thousands of photos but nothing compares to seeing it for yourself. It's worth paying for a guided tour of the Colosseum.
Places to stay. It all depends on what kind of budget you are on. Bookings.com , Trivago and TripAdviser can help, you may even consider Airbnb. But, I always say the more comfortable your accommodation is, the better your holiday experience. And if you want to be close to everything then don't stay further out than the Spanish Steps, the Colosseum and the Termini Station.
Tip: I don't recommend staying too close to Termini Station.
Where to eat. Italy is all about food, isn't it? Beware, traditional Italian food isn't what you might expect. There is a reason why we don't know all the dishes, it's because they're not all as tantalising as pizza, pasta or gelato. Tip: I recommend a Trattoria over a restaurant. Better food, better prices. Not on the main drag but I think that's better. The further from a main attraction, the better the price.
